The Importance Of The Internet In Offshoring Of Legal Processing 4

Most software applications are available to the LPO through:

1.     Virtual Private Networks (VPN) - The LPO connects to a computer in the lawyer's office. The lawyer sets the user name and password. The computer can be connected to the lawyer's main server or not. The computer can give full or limited access to files and printing. With VPN the lawyer has complete direct supervisory authority over the LPO thereby satisfying her or his LPO ethical duties.
2.     Services That Connect Computers For A Fee (SCCF) - Basically, this is a VPN type connection setup and maintained by a third party service provider such as LogMeIn.com. The lawyer sets it up with the provider using an email account. The LPO is invited to the lawyer's computer.
Cloud Services - For a monthly fee Internet providers offer software run on their servers. A lawyer can contract with Abacus, Westlaw, Lexis and others then grant the LPO access.
