The Sheriff must report back to the court whether he was
able to find your spouse and give him or her the papers. The Sheriff only has a
certain number of days to do this. This is called the "return" date.
If the Sheriff cannot find your spouse the first time, your lawyer can ask that
he try again. A new Summons has to be issued. You can keep trying to have your
spouse served this way if you find new addresses for him or her. However, if
the Sheriff is still not able to find your spouse, you will have to serve him
or her (give notice) in another way.
