GETTING YOUR PRIOR NAME BACK
After your divorce, you may want to go back to using
your former last name. If this is not your first marriage, you may want to go
back to your former married name, especially if you have children with that
name. Be sure to tell your lawyer you want this at your first interview. Your
request should be in your Complaint for divorce, but if it is not, you are
sometimes allowed to add the request at a later date. If you do get your former
name back, you will need to have a certified copy of your decree to change your
name on your driver’s license, social security card, and other important
things. For a small fee you can get a certified copy of your decree from the
clerk of the district court.
