Who is entitled to alimony?
Alimony is money one spouse pays to the other after the
marriage ends. A court might order alimony for several reasons. In the case of
a longer marriage, alimony may provide support to the spouse who earns less (or
not at all), to allow that spouse to maintain his or her standard of living.
This is called alimony in futuro, or periodic alimony. Alimony may be required
to help a spouse earn more or get a job, possibly assisting a spouse to return
to school to increase his or her earning capacity. This is called
rehabilitative alimony. Finally, the court may allow one spouse to pay money
over time to make up for an imbalance in property division. This is called
alimony in solido, or lump sum alimony.
