TEXAS Part 36

3. What do we need to do to get child support?

What is Child Support in Texas?

Child support is money to help cover the child’s basic needs.  One or both parents can pay child support. Texas’s child support guidelines are a minimum (not a maximum) standard of support that the State “presumes” is in a child’s best interest.  Some parents accept the guideline amount simply to avoid conflict or because the amount works for them.  However, many parents do not believe it is appropriate to provide only a minimum standard amount of money for the care and needs of their children.  The child support guideline amount for most families is not nearly enough to cover expenses of education, extracurricular activities, tutoring, lessons, sports, braces, cars, gas, etc.
