4. What do we need
to do to get alimony?
Maintenance may be awarded to either spouse in a divorce
without regard to gender and is usually intended to be rehabilitative. While
New York no longer uses the term “alimony” it is used by the Internal Revenue
Service, and references to alimony by the I.R.S. can be read as “spousal
support” or “maintenance”.
