SOUTH CAROLINA Part 15
Types of Custody
Sole custody, typically favored in South Carolina case
law, is defined as a situation where a parent or other person “has temporary or
permanent custody of a child and . . . the rights and responsibilities for
major decisions concerning the child, including . . . education, medical and
dental care, extracurricular activities, and religious training.” If sole custody is awarded, the noncustodial
parent will be allowed “appropriate parenting time.”
